Natural durability of wood

An important consideration when building with timber is predicting how long the structure will last. Whilst insects, decay or rotting organisms and marine borers can all attack wood, some timber species have the ability to resist attack better than others. The natural durability of a species to resist attack by wood destroying organisms is an indication of how long that timber will last when it is exposed to a defined set of exposure conditions without any additional preservative protection. The natural durability of timber species varies, even so within the wood from the same species of tree, depending on whether its sapwood or heartwood.

Sealers

Cemcrete Sealers are transparent protective coatings. Protecting cement floors and walls with a good quality Cemcrete sealer is crucial and not only makes the surface easier to clean, but it also offers other benefits as well, such as enriching the colour intensity of the overlay, blocking the penetration of stains, and improving water repellency and abrasion resistance.

Thermoplastic Coating

Thermoplastic coating is a durable pigmented coating for walls, ceilings and roofs.

Cemcote

A finely ground mixture of white Portland cement, pigments and chemicals. It is supplied in powder form requiring mixing with water onsite to produce a smooth, flowing coating which sets rock hard.

EIFS Basecoat

EIFS BaseCoat is a special mixture of various admixtures and Ordinary Portland Cement for repair of concrete and masonry, adhering and surfacing of EIFS Insulation boards prior to applying Cemcrete’s decorative coatings.

Superscreed

Superscreed is a thin high-strength screed. A 10-20mm high-strength, shrinkage compensated granolithic type screed mix.

DecoCrete

DecoCrete Shapeable textured plaster. A coloured, cement-based material formulated to be plastered to excessive thicknesses but does not slide or shrink and dries rock-hard.

CreteCote is a thin skim-on floor coating. A coloured, thin-film cement-based floor covering which is versatile and durable.

CreteStain walls

CreteStain Wall Finish – An acid-based mixture containing special chemicals which reacts with the OPC in cement/concrete and permanently colours the surface.

Disposal of Treated Wood

Our guidance note on the disposal of treated wood, provided by the South African Wood Preservers Association (SAWPA), offers comprehensive information on handling and disposing of treated wood waste responsibly. Treated wood, protected from wood-boring insects and decay, is predominantly treated with coal tar creosote or waterborne copper-based preservatives like CCA.

SAWPA | Sapwood and Heartwood
