With their combination of high-tech design and environmental benefits LED lights are set to change the lighting market. In many companies, environmental sustainability is not seen as a true driver of business value. Verbatim takes a different approach, combining its drive for technical excellence with its strong commitment to environmental sustainability to create a revolutionary approach to lighting. It’s a strategy that is paying off as Verbatim is on track to become a market leader in LED lighting.

The company’s commitment to sustainability influences every stage of product design. All materials used comply with the standards relating to Restriction of Hazardous Substances and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Even its manufacturing sites and warehouses meet the highest standards of environmental management, holding ISO 14001 certification. Packaging is made from recycled materials and circuit boards, magnesium, aluminium and rubber components can be reused.

When it comes to the supply chain, Verbatim also pays attention to reducing CO2 emissions by optimising freight and logistics options as far as possible.

This approach is consonant with that of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Verbatim’s holding company and the research and development engine behind Verbatim products. Mitsubishi sees innovation in product design as a by-product of the drive to promote sustainability.

Verbatim supplies an industry-leading range of LED lights for the homeowner, the professional and industrial markets. The technical innovation behind the success of Verbatim LED lights can be seen in the range of solutions it offers. For example, Natural Vision LEDs with violet chip technology use violet excitation with red, green and blue phosphors to provide a wide-spectrum light with near-sunshine quality – with readings of up to 98 on the Colour Rendering Index. By contrast, conventional technology misses green and red portions of the spectrum, for a reading on the Colour Rendering Index of less than 80.

Gregg Fox, LED and Cleansui product manager at Verbatim South Africa, says, “Verbatim’s range also includes CTA (colour temperature adjusted dimming) globes that dim just like incandescent lamps. When on full, they emit a warm bright light, but when dimmed down, they produce an even warmer, more comforting light.”

Another technical innovation is the built-in temperature control system which protects the critical electronic components in the lamp from overheating. This ensures a minimum lifetime of 35 000 hours – which represents a substantial cost saving for users. It also results in savings in CO2 emissions.

Fox believes that with their combination of high-tech design and environmental benefits, including significant energy savings, LED lights will change the lighting market.
