Although the importance of a roof structure as a component of a building and its functioning cannot be overstated, it is possibly one of the most neglected parts of a building. While some roof systems call for less intense maintenance than others, all roofing systems should be checked periodically and maintained accordingly. The Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA) weighs in.

In a depressed global economy, Metrotile, manufacturer of lightweight roofing systems, has bucked the trend by growing exponentially over the past few years – so much so that the company’s European operation has had to double its production capacity to meet the demand for its eco-friendly roofing systems. Africa Thermal Insulations (ATI) specialises in thermal insulation products that meet the recently updated building regulations, as required for proof of compliance and occupancy certificates. In the past, the decision on whether to include roofing insulation or not was most often left to the architect or owner of a building. It was an optional choice and insulation was often excluded, viewed as an unnecessary expense. However, with the recently legislated new building regulations, it is now essential for builders and roofing specialists to highlight to customers the need for effective insulation – not only for the benefit of reduced energy bills but also to meet specific industry standards and obtain the required compliance and occupancy certificates.
Everite Building Products has added a new in-house finished paint and surface coating system to its S7 Bigsix roofing sheet plant at its Kliprivier facility south of Johannesburg. The inclusion of passive energy efficiency measures in new building projects and retrofits is a clear starting point for all developers thinking sustainability – as early as during the planning and design process for interior environment controls.
