Corobrik's Cederberg and Nutmeg paving bricks make up the pedestrian boulevard of Secunda Mall's entranceTasked with designing the paving of Mpumalanga’s new Secunda Mall development, Insite Landscape Architects in Centurion, opted for a ‘simplistic but not simple’ look by choosing the darker Nutmeg of Corobrik’s Clay Paver range, which contrasted with the lighter Cederberg.

Avoiding a busy pattern, the landscapers felt the solid blocks of Nutmeg and Cederberg on the walkways were in keeping with surrounds.

At the service openings on the facade, the darker, hard-wearing Nutmeg colour was used, as these are busy areas.

The clay pavers provide not only the aesthetics attributed to neutral-tone fired clay, but are also colourfast.

Their structural integrity, combined with rich colours and textures, provide a hard wearing surface that uplifts and adds value to urban landscapes.

Secunda Mall was officially opened on 23 October 2013 with contractors working tirelessly to get everything completed in time.

Jacques van der Merwe, contracts manager from Greenacres Projects & Landscapes in Centurion, said they had about 40 labourers paving and cutting on the project, which took five weeks to complete.

He explained that the conditions were tough as there were so many different companies trying to get things done simultaneously. They worked from 7am the day before the opening, through the night, until 7am on the morning of the opening to get all the walkways done in time.

The paving project covered 3 600m2 of walkways and entrances throughout the mall using about 162 000 Corobrik Nutmeg and Cederberg pavers.
