Najeeba Hassim received her award for winning the regional finals from Allin Dangers.  Also pictured are (left) Mthembeni Mkhize, Head of the Dept. of Architecture and (right) Juan Solis from the University.Innovation is the standout quality that differentiates design resolutions and helps define architecture as special and appreciated by one’s peers. Innovation in sync with context provides the delight factor permitting architectural design to compete comfortably on the world stage. Technical skill, the ability to create memorable form that draws one in while treading softly on our planet is what puts the finishing touches to sustainable architecture. South African architecture continues to take positive strides also demonstrating an extra creative dimension unique in a country where the shaping of the urban landscape requires an appreciation of the complexities of creating an inclusive built environment.

Architects of the future combine sustainability with design

Sarah de Villiers will represent the University of the Witwatersrand at the 2014 Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year Awards. Left is Masters Year Convener, Dr. Jonathan Noble.A fine architect combines design talent with engineering ability, social awareness and an aptitude for business. In recent years this skills set has, of necessity, expanded to include the pursuit of sustainable development. Today’s projects demand a clear understanding of the impact of modern technologies on the environment as well as the importance of wise water consumption, low energy usage and a light carbon footprint. Students of architecture who embrace these concepts and unite them with their artistic talent are those who will shape the built environment of the future.

Corobrik's Cederberg and Nutmeg paving bricks make up the pedestrian boulevard of Secunda Mall's entranceTasked with designing the paving of Mpumalanga’s new Secunda Mall development, Insite Landscape Architects in Centurion, opted for a ‘simplistic but not simple’ look by choosing the darker Nutmeg of Corobrik’s Clay Paver range, which contrasted with the lighter Cederberg.
