Laboratories designed specifically for the education sector

With Malawi’s education sector booming at an exponential rate, EC Laridon has been working closely with local contractors on numerous projects over the last decade to facilitate the transition from dated British Colonial era laboratory facilities, to fresh contemporary designs with state-of-the-art facilities.

Most recently a new science facility built from the ground up was commissioned by The Ministry of Education Science and Technology at Chancellors College in the foothills of the Zomba mountain range. With student numbers growing every year, the need for updated facilities was identified and a two-story building was proposed that would create much-needed space for science ventures that have a connection to the Malawian community.  The Africa Development Bank stepped in as a donor for the much-needed project and soon thereafter a collaboration between Joadah Consult engineers and the SR Nicholas Group sought the expertise of EC Laridon with its 75 years of experience and development in the field of laboratories designed specifically for the education sector.

The brief called for two new undergraduate wet chemistry laboratories to accommodate 130 students, as well as 7 post graduate laboratories located on the second floor that include a high end organic chemistry laboratory, several instrumentation laboratories and a fully equipped wet lab environment and resources they need to take their ventures to the next stage of development.

E.C. Laridon set about the task utilising robust, ultramodern materials in a modular system that offers flexibility that complements both form and function. The furniture framework is designed to endure decades of abuse and stress, with chemical resistant epoxy powder coating added to withstand spills, fumes and oxidation, thereby maintaining the aesthetics for years to come.

Work surfaces, the hardest working component of any laboratory, is the first line of defence in a harsh chemical laboratory environment. Gentas G-lab ticked all the boxes with its integrated Nano-technology giving birth to spaces that resist chemical attack whilst at the same time inhibiting the growth of unwanted bacteria and germs. It is non-porous and extremely robust and able to support excessive weight as well as resisting damage through friction. The modular cabinet system added flexibility to the design offering up a space that can grow over time, and change as the needs of the learner evolves.

The laboratory services addressed the need for every student to have access to water and gas. Broen Lab laboratory range fittings complemented the integrated polypropylene acid resistant sinks to provide these services to every student, with an added vacuum pump fitted to the taps to harness the power of water in the absence of vacuum facilities. Fume cupboards were incorporated into every laboratory affording all students the opportunity to partake in experimentation traditionally only done through demonstration.

Upon entering the labs, you are immediately met with large open spaces filled with world class facilities which from the very first glance opens the eyes of the student to opportunities of unlimited experimentation with an incredible amount of space per student with on lavish high quality finishes setting the scene to develop the leaders of tomorrow.
