Kempegowda International Airport, India: Massive infrastructure project
Kempegowda International Airport Project
In this exceptional project, Terraforce supplied over 110,000 L12 blocks for the construction of retaining walls along both sides of Terminal Boulevard, a newly constructed 10-lane thoroughfare serving India’s Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru. The installation spans approximately 1.2km, with retaining walls covering a total surface area of 9,000m².
After careful evaluation of various retaining wall options, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) project team—comprising Prasenjit Biswas (General Manager, Landside Planning), Monnappa BC (General Manager, Projects), and Prasannamurti Desai (Vice President, Landscape)—selected the Terraforce retaining wall system based on several critical factors.
Aesthetics played a pivotal role in the decision, along with the system’s ability to accommodate vegetation. The blocks facilitated the planting of flowers and other plants, while incorporated Hume pipes allowed for tree planting. Additionally, the Terraforce solution offered significant advantages in terms of reduced soil excavation requirements and cost-effectiveness compared to alternatives such as reinforced concrete or reinforced earthen walls.
The project will achieve its full visual impact once the Metro is established in the centre of the two access lanes, with established plants and mature trees creating a lush, green entrance to the international airport.
Dubai Silicon Oasis, UAE: Architectural elegance and functionality
Dubai Silicon Oasis Project
The second award-winning project features impressive six-metre high Terraforce L16 rock face retaining walls expertly installed by Al Aamal Construction at Dubai Silicon Oasis. These retaining structures were essential to accommodate significant level differences on the site and to provide access to a leisure area at ground level, with 4×4 Step block access stairs and ramps connecting to residences at the top level.
Sinan Awad of Al Aamal Construction explained the technical complexity of the installation: “The site consists of set-back and vertical walls, as well as 90-degree corners that were achieved by carefully cutting the Terraforce L16 rock face blocks. For additional stability, the blocks were concrete filled, reinforced with rebar, and we used double block rows with the rock face finish facing outwards on either side for some of the vertical walls adjoining the two grand staircases and ramps.”
The project’s integration with existing structures was achieved by using dowels to secure connections. In total, the installation utilised 41,100 Terraforce L16 blocks and 2,000 Terraforce 4×4 Step blocks, creating a harmonious and functional environment that balances engineering requirements with aesthetic appeal.
