During National Home Security Month June 2019, ASSA ABLOY sponsored by Yale highlighted top security tips to keep the home secure.
1. Change all the locks when you move into a new house. If you lose your keys, change the locks immediately.
2. Secure your gate motor with a weatherproof, outdoor padlock to prevent tampering & theft.
3. For extra security, lock your garage from the inside. We suggest the Yale Laminated Padlock Range.
4. When you are away on holiday ensure that your house appears occupied at all times. Use timers to switch on lights and radios when you are not at home.
5. If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lighting with an infrared detector. Most thieves don’t want to be observed trying to gain entry into the property.
6. Trees near windows and entrances or shrubbery that might shield a burglar from view is a major flaw in your home security. Consider cutting back or removing potential risks.
7. Talk to your neighbours about any suspicious people or strange cars you notice lurking about. Join the local neighbourhood watch or policing forum for crime updates.
8. Ask for credentials and ID’s from any sales/delivery/municipality representative that wants to gain entry into your home. Many professional burglars use this as an opportunity to break-in. Always phone and check with the security visitor office before letting the person in. Make sure the domestic workers are aware of these dangers and follow the same procedure.
9. Dogs are good deterrents for would-be criminals. Even a small, noisy dog can be effective. Beware of the large increase of dog poisonings and clean up any suspicious items that may have been thrown over the boundary wall. Have the vets emergency number contact details saved on your cell phone.
10. Beware of credit card cloning and skimming. It takes a matter of seconds to clone your card and unauthorised transactions to go off your account. Carry credit cards in an RFID blocking wallet. Avoid ATMs that look like they have been tampered with or damaged. If you suspect your card has been compromised contact your bank immediately.
