Discover a.b.e.'s essential products for hospital construction

a.b.e. supplies a wide variety of products for the construction of Hospitals, providing both flooring and concrete performance enhancing/repair products. Flooring products include pumpable, self-levelling screed to level and prepare thousands of square metres of concrete flooring for the application vinyl flooring overlay.

Screed flooring in a hospital.

a.b.e. abescreed SLC P, is a fast-track self-levelling screed which hardens rapidly and is ideal for levelling floors where quick setting is essential. The screed has several other advantages, including the fact that up to 2 000 square metres can be pumped daily under suitable conditions, it can be walked on six to eight hours in warm weather, and it is protein-free and so does not harbour bacteria. Usually vinyl, or other coverings, can be applied onto 10 mm thick self-levelling screed after only 24 hours and a 5 mm screed after 12 hours. This type of screed is applied at hospital and clinics by specialist approved flooring contractors.

abescreed self-levelling screed has proved extremely popular throughout South Africa and a.b.e. now offers a range of abescreed self-levellers, namely:

  • abescreed SLCP 15 can be hand applied by trowel (0 – 20 mm) or can be pumped (4 – 20 mm). For pumped applications, an 8 mm average thickness would be a typical expectation on a reasonably level base. For fast-track refurbishment and new construction where floor finishes such as carpets, ceramic tiles, vinyl, wood block or cork need to be applied quickly. Ideal for smoothing concrete floors in office buildings, dwellings, shops, public buildings, schools, hospitals and airports.
  • abescreed SLCP 25, offers the same features as the abescreed SLCP 15 but instead of rapidly hardening to 15 MPa it offers 25 MPa compressive strength after 28 days. These screeds get applied at maximum 20 mm thickness with walk on time in 4 hours.
  • abescreed SLCP FS is a fast set self-levelling screed which offers a compressive strength of 30 MPa after 28 days and can be walked on after 2 hours.

Surface preparation of the base slab or screed should be sound with a minimum thickness of 40 mm and with a minimum compressive strength of 25 MPa and a minimum of 1.5 MPa tensile adhesion strength. All surfaces must be clean, mechanically sound and free of laitance, dust, grease and oil. Vacuum abrasive blast cleaning is the preferred method of surface preparation. Wet grinding followed by vacuuming may also be used. Concrete surfaces should be primed with abeprime SLC acrylic primer. Apply the abeprime SLC acrylic onto the floor surface by means of a brush or roller and leave it to dry before applying abescreed SLCP 15 or 25. Priming improves the adhesion of the abescreed SLCP to concrete, prevents formation of air bubbles and reduces water absorption into the sub floor.

Concrete repair and performance enhancing products supplied by a.b.e. include repair mortars and structural adhesives like:

  • durarep FC (fairing compound), a cementitious polymer modified fairing coat that covers concrete surface imperfections and provides a smooth finish.
  • durarep FR (fibre reinforced), a cementitious structural repair mortar, is being used by Group Five for a wide variety of applications. The product provides excellent bonding to concrete when used with the appropriate primer, does not shrink, is chloride-free, and apart from being easy to apply, also has high ultimate strength. It is suitable for repairing voids and honeycombing in concrete, and for profiling as well as general concrete repairs required during the construction stage of a project.
  • epidermix 344 as well as epidermix 345 structural wet-to-dry concrete adhesives are also being used and 344 provides an ‘open time’ (the time it remains workable before setting hard) of about two hours, while the 345 version has an impressive 18 hours open time capacity. These two products, suitable for structural situations, provide high ultimate tensile strength as well as lap sheer strengths. It can be used to bond fresh concrete to existing concrete, plaster to brickwork, or to provide a damp-proof barrier in the concrete matrix.
