The Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) has issued the call for entries for Steel Awards 2012. The closing date for nominations is 30 April 2012.  Although special attention will be given to sustainable development projects – looking at green building, low environmental impact, community development and other such factors – there are, as usual, no fixed categories in which projects should be entered, with the exception of the Tubular Steel Structures and Light Steel Frame Building categories. The judges decide on categories based on the actual entries received each year. Last year’s categories offer a guideline. They included Mining and Industrial, Architectural, and Bridges, as well as the Tubular Steel and Light Steel Frame Building categories.

The character of entries – 57 in all – received for the Steel Awards 2011 reflects a shift in the activity of the steel construction industry since the high intensity period leading up to the World Cup last year.

SAISC communications manager, Renee Pretorius, says that this year the online entry facility on the Steel Awards website will be easier to use and the SAISC encourages all nominators to use this route. She adds that the institute will be using social media networks such as Facebook and YouTube to give the projects of Steel Awards 2011 wider exposure.
