The South African Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA) reports that it has made substantial progress in its quest to obtain government accreditation for training in the coatings industry. Deryck Spence, executive director of SAPMA, says the association recently held a fruitful meeting with the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) regional manager, Moshe Mogklana, where – based on a business plan drawn up by SAPMA – a training “partnership” between the two bodies was discussed. “CHIETA afterwards indicated that it would be prepared to fund training for trainees identified through the government’s Workplace Skills Plan, to be drawn up for the coatings industry. The training will be provided by SAPMA’s training arm, the SA Paint Industry Training Institute (SAPITI), and a specialist training company, MLG, which will supply ancillary training,” Spence says.
