Pan African Shopfitters, an industry leader in customised shopfittings for major national and international retail outlets, has installed Apex general purpose strip curtains in its paint shop to prevent dust entering the area from the adjacent joinery shop.  About 60 linear metres of clear PVC strip curtaining was supplied for the installation and Pan African Shopfitters’ purchasing manager, Kim Tiley, says it is performing exactly as required: completely sealing off the paint shop to prevent any possibility of dust ingress, while still allowing easy passage for personnel and work pieces.

Ceratech has launched the Cool Roofs Challenge to raise awareness in the industry about energy saving through roof coating technology, and to try and shift current attitudes which show a persistent preference for darker roof colours. The Ceratech Cool Roofs Challenge promotes the fact that cooling a building’s roof is one of the quickest, most cost-effective and guaranteed methods of reducing ambient heat in all types of buildings.  Explaining how the Cool Roofs Challenge was conceived, Ceratech CEO Chris Hayman says, “The benefits of cool roofs are being recognised around the world. A cool roof can reduce internal temperatures by as much as 45%, lower electricity costs, and significantly reduce roof maintenance for up to ten years, due to the virtual elimination of expansion and contraction in the roof sheeting. It’s obvious that we’re way behind here in South Africa – and we want to ask why?  “We are also asking why, at a time when the world needs to be more environmentally aware and is facing escalating costs of energy, many architects and developers continue to be concerned about roofs being white or in a pale colour, despite the benefits this affords.”

Alububble radiant barrier insulation, manufactured by Africa Thermal Insulations (ATI) has been used for many years mainly in industrial applications. Over recent years it has gained popularity in domestic applications as well. Although it is clear that the product works, there have been no recognised test methods that measure the difference radiant barriers make to internal temperatures when installed. ATI therefore decided to conduct a test case study using thermal imaging.  First, in an uninsulated house, it recorded thermal images and temperatures at different points outside and inside the building. These temperatures showed the heat flow into the house. A retrofit installation of Alububble was then completed in the house and thermal images and temperatures were recorded again.  The outside temperature on both days was recorded at 30°C but the difference in the internal temperature, once the Alububble radiant barrier had been installed, was notable. The diagram illustrates the temperature readings on both the insulated and uninsulated house.

Apex strip curtains offer an inexpensive way to cover a door opening and prevent the ingress of cold air or hot air – as may be required – while still allowing easy passage for personnel and vehicular traffic. Manufactured from specially formulated PVC material that does not become brittle with use, Apex strip curtains are transparent for optimum visibility and safety. This locally manufactured product is best known for its patented Balledge design which, while providing an effective thermal seal, parts easily under pressure to allow people and goods to move through unhindered.

Concrete, one of the world’s most widely used building materials, is not only a particularly durable material but also provides effective sound and thermal insulation. Hanlie Turner, marketing manager at the Cement & Concrete Institute (C&CI), says noise can be described as unwanted sound. “When sound waves strike a barrier such as a wall or floor, the waves are reflected, absorbed or transmitted in varying degrees, depending on the form of the barrier and the material in which it is constructed.

According to Wim Dessing, managing director of Apex Strip Curtains and Doors, high quality PVC strip curtains offer an affordable solution in various applications where dirt, dust or insects need to be kept out and hygiene, humidity, temperature and noise need to be controlled. "Our Balledge PVC strip curtains are equally at home in the food, pharmaceutical and heavy engineering industries," says Dessing.
