SANS 10400 part XA, developed by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and brought into effect from November 2011, is the first of a set of minimum standards for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability for new and refurbished buildings. The new energy efficiency regulations tackle the building design and construction process by providing guidelines for minimum requirements for design elements such as glazing, insulation, shading, orientation and building services, including air-conditioning, hot water supply and lighting.
