The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has opted to replace vandal-prone steel street-lighting poles with pre-stressed I-shaped concrete poles in several of its municipal districts. Aveng Manufacturing Infraset, won the tender to supply 800 concrete poles for the first phase of the project.

At Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio, Brazil, in June, the UN Global Compact Corporate Sustainability Forum released the results of an independent global trial of LED street lighting undertaken in 12 of the world’s largest cities.  The LightSavers trial found that the use of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) in street lighting can generate energy savings as high as 85%. The programme also indicates that citizens of the pilot cities where the trial was conducted prefer LED lighting, citing the social and environmental benefits associated with it.

Prestressed concrete poles manufactured by Aveng Manufacturing Infraset’s Railway Division are being used to convey electricity in two new Boksburg housing developments, Windmill Park Ext 16 and 17.  Kiron Investments is responsible for the development which involves the construction of 840 affordable houses in total.

Johannesburg City Power specified prestressed concrete poles to replace timber poles in the electricity distribution network at Rabie Ridge, a suburb of Midrand which includes a mix of informal, low-cost and affordable housing. The project also involved the installation of a split prepaid meterage system for over 1 900 houses – with new metering boxes and ready boards with keypads – as well as the installation of new street lighting, transformers and bundling conductors.
