In an extremely challenging global and local economic environment, the South African stainless steel industry is facing strong headwinds. Sassda’s Executive Director John Tarboton notes that the stainless steel industry is favoured in China and based on reports from the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), Chinese stainless steel production more than tripled from 2008 to 2014, while production in the rest of the world grew only 3.7% in the same period.

The Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association held its annual AGM in July this year. The Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (Sassda) will stage the Stainless Steel Awards again this year. The awards were last presented in 2008 but, as 2012 marks 100 years of the development of stainless steel, the awards will form part of the industry’s celebrations of ‘a century of innovation’.  Sassda’s new executive director, Bill Scurr, says, “The awards are an industry highlight. They aim to recognise and promote excellence, innovation and entrepreneurial development in the stainless steel industry by profiling innovative thinking and successes in the industry.”
