The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), in partnership with SAPOA (South African Property Owners Association), launched the new Green Lease Toolkit at the 44th annual SAPOA Convention held at the Durban International Convention Centre at the end of May 2012. The Green Lease Toolkit was developed in response to growing market demand from South African landlords and tenants. Landlords have consistently requested guidance and resources to help them harness the benefits of well-designed, well-built, and, importantly, well-operated buildings. Tenants too are increasingly seeking out ‘green’ space in a bid to gain the advantage of the healthier and more productive working environment that green buildings offer. A ‘green lease’ is structured to ensure that a building that has been designed and built for sustainability is operated in a sustainable way.

The 44th annual South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) International Convention and Property Exhibition, SA’s foremost gathering of decision-makers in the commercial property sector, will take place on 30 and 31 May 2012 at the Durban International Convention Centre.  “The convention provides an exceptional opportunity for those involved in the commercial property sector to get together with a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from all levels of government,” says SAPOA CEO Neil Gopal.

The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) was well represented at the recent SAPOA Convention where the team had the chance to listen to what professionals in the property industry, from across the country, think about green building, the Green Star SA tools and the work the GBCSA is doing. It seems that, increasingly, the South African property industry is realising the need for a more sustainable way of building. While the Green Star SA tools go a long way towards ensuring sustainable design and construction, even a 6 Star Green Star SA building would only be truly effective in reducing waste output and energy and water consumption with the cooperation of those occupying it. For this reason, the GBCSA is partnering with SAPOA to develop a Green Lease Guide for the South African property industry.
