Top management in South Africa should be directly involved in introducing and maintaining a safety culture in the workplace. This is the view of Graeme Smith, chief operating officer of Chryso Southern Africa. Smith was addressing employees at the Chryso annual Materis Safety Day function. Chryso SA is a subsidiary of the French Materis Group (one of the world’s biggest producers of speciality chemicals for the construction industry) which has made March 16 a day dedicated to health and safety in all its subsidiaries, globally.

The Gauteng Master Builders Association’s (GMBA’s) 2010 intake of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) cadets will be the first to qualify with the SAQA-registered (South African Qualifications Authority) National Certificate: Construction Health and Safety NQF Level 3, which was registered in March 2010. The students will graduated last month, February 2011.

In the Federated Employers’ Mutual Assurance (FEMA) Health and Safety Awards presented towards the end of last year, two companies that are members of the Gauteng Master Builders Association (GMBA) won top honours in their respective categories. BBM, a Sabie-based general building and civil engineering company won the FEM health and safety award for 2009 in the ‘High Risk, Small Employer’ category. Another GMBA member, Kevin Bates Flooring, won the award in the ‘Low Risk, Small Employer’ category.
