World Architecture Festival – Entries now open for WAF 2011

It is a unique meeting point for architects, suppliers and clients, attracting hundreds of entries and visitors from all over the world. We’d like to encourage our Specifile subscribers and Specifier readers to enter. Last year, Soccer City in South Africa won the Sports Building category and in 2009 South Africa featured with the Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre – let’s try and keep South Africa in the spotlight.

Ponte re-imagined, Hillbrow re-viewed

He protectively ushers his son across the zebra crossing, making sure he is between him and the traffic. The little boy is smartly dressed in a new school uniform and I can’t help noticing how black and shiny his shoes are against the dusty backdrop, as if he didn’t play outside at break time or has carefully brushed the dust off them before leaving school. I get the impression he is a Grade One pupil who has just started school, still immensely proud of his new uniform and the unblemished satchel on his back. Dad, also smartly dressed, deposits him at the entrance to Skylar Mansions and hurries off, probably going back to work. Is it strange that on this first visit to Hillbrow in about 30 years, I am left with an overall impression of neatness?

It’s time – New Kenako Mall to open on 25 April

After much anticipation the R195 million Kenako Mall, in iBayi, Port Elizabeth, was opened on 25 April 2013. The name Kenako – meaning “it is time” – is more than appropriate as the shopping centre is seen as long overdue in the area. Research done for the development indicated a catchment area of some 340 000 customers and an estimated retail potential of R1.22 billion at the time it was done.

Ultra-hygienic floor finish for Kraft Foods

An ultra-hygienic flooring system was required for new flooring at the Kraft Foods SA wafer production plant in Port Elizabeth and a.b.e. Construction Chemicals supplied the right products.  Cynthia Hoffman, a.b.e. regional manager in the Eastern Cape, says the company’s abeflo HPU White Sands three-component polyurethane self-levelling system was applied to an 800m² floor area in the production plant.
