Government checking on lead content in paints

The National Department of Health is continuing its campaign to remove hazardous lead-based paints from retail shelves in South Africa.  Deryck Spence, executive director of the SA Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA), said Professor Angela Mathee, director of the Medical Research Council’s Environment and Health Research Unit, had advised SAPMA that paint samples were being collected from retailers for laboratory analysis of the lead content.

Contractors join manufacturers against lead in paint

New support for the South African Paint Manufacturing Association’s drive to remove paints containing lead from the coatings industry has come from painting contractors. Deryck Spence, executive director of SAPMA, recently addressed a meeting of leading paint contractors at SAPMA’s head office in Bedfordview. Feedback from the contractors present was very supportive, with several indicating that they were interested in joining SAPMA and following its lead-free philosophy.
