The five kilometre-long promenade along the seafront in Umhlanga, north of Durban, has been paved with clay pavers from Corobrik. In the selected colours of Cederburg, Champagne and Burgundy, the pavers are laid in a swirl and wave pattern that is inspired by Umhlanga’s sculptural ‘whale bone’ pier and complements the coastal landscape. The upgrade of the promenade has been completed in four phases over a period of about four years. The project was in design when, in March 2007, extreme adverse weather damaged a lot of beachfront infrastructure and the upgrading of the promenade was consequently accelerated forward. It was completed in part ahead of South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and the final phase was finished in December 2011, in time for the holiday season.
