Thermocoustex - In Train Stations

ThermocousTex Fibre Blankets (Foil) were specified and installed over purlins on straining wires in the Bellville Station. This product was specified as it has both excellent acoustic dampening benefits (by preventing the steel roof sheets from vibrating) and excellent thermal insulation properties. These benefits have created an environment within the Train Station that is both thermally controlled and acoustically “calm”…

New coatings training centre set to open mid-year

The South African Paint Manufacturing Association’s (SAPMA’s) new Centre of Excellence training centre is set to open around the middle of this year. The Centre of Excellence will operate from the old Bifsa Training Centre in Springs on the East Rand, once the revamp and modification of the premises is complete. The opening of the training centre follows the accreditation of SAPMA’s training programmes last year by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA).

Government support for coatings industry training

The South African Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA) reports that it has made substantial progress in its quest to obtain government accreditation for training in the coatings industry.  Deryck Spence, executive director of SAPMA, says the association recently held a fruitful meeting with the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) regional manager, Moshe Mogklana, where – based on a business plan drawn up by SAPMA – a training “partnership” between the two bodies was discussed.  “CHIETA afterwards indicated that it would be prepared to fund training for trainees identified through the government’s Workplace Skills Plan, to be drawn up for the coatings industry. The training will be provided by SAPMA’s training arm, the SA Paint Industry Training Institute (SAPITI), and a specialist training company, MLG, which will supply ancillary training,” Spence says.

Accreditation is vital for coatings sector training

SAPMA, the South African Paint Manufacturing Association, has trained over 6 000 employees in the coatings industry over the past 20 years through its training arm – the SA Paint Industry Training Institute (SAPITI). However, Deryck Spence, executive director of the association, has warned that the lack of government accredited training has become a major threat to the future of the coatings industry.  Spence says there is a critical shortage of skills in the industry. “The pool of resources is shrinking and is simply not sustainable in the long term. There is apathy towards the training provided by SAPITI because of the lack of accreditation from the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA). SAPMA members all subscribe to government’s training levy but do not receive refunds or BBBEE points for non-accredited courses, despite the fact that the government offers no alternative training for the industry,” he says.

Boost for training in SA coatings industry

Training in the South African coatings industry has received a major boost through new access to over 65 training modules of the British Coatings Federation (BCF). All the training modules are sanctioned by the internationally-respected training body, City and Guilds of London. The BCF decision to allow its training modules to be introduced in South Africa follows a visit to the UK by Deryck Spence, executive director of the South African Paint Manufacturing Association (SAPMA). His negotiations with BCF will now lead to the first formal Articles of Association being drawn up between BCF and SAPMA.
