Isolite

Isolite (EPS) is a material which is used extensively in the building and construction industry as insulation, and has many attributes, not least of which is its proven safety record during all stages of its life cycle – from production, during use, through to re-use or recycling. It is not surprising that health and safety take top priority in the building and construction industry and the one material that performs well is EPS, whose physical properties make it ideal for specification.

Thermocoustex - Fire Test

As a member of TIASA (Thermal Insulation Association of South Africa), Datlink Insulation and Acoustics is required to re-new existing Fire Tests on their products every five years. This was done recently on ThermocousTex Fibre Blankets and ThermocousTex Boards. Both products maintained their original Fire Rating of “no-flame spread” and were rated with the B/B1/2 rating as before, which conforms to the legislation as set out in the Building Regulations SANS 10400-XA.

Radiant barrier insulation reduces heat build-up

The newly legislated SANS 10400-XA: 2011 and SANS 204: 2008 introduce the requirement for proof of compliance with the standards set out for energy efficiency in buildings. This means that architects and building developers need to ensure that new buildings and building refurbishments are designed to meet the prescribed energy efficiency standards; that a building’s performance in terms of energy usage is calculated and documented; and that the building is built to perform accordingly.  Thermal insulation materials – for roofs, walls and floors – constitute a key element in building to achieve the required thermal resistance values (R-values) as set out in SANS 204.

SANS thermal performance standards applied in gap housing project

Eco-Insulation was installed to specification SANS 10400 XA at Pelican Park, a gap housing project in the Cape, ensuring legislated thermal performance. The product had to be pumped into the ceiling of each residential unit to a thickness of 135 mm. Made from flame-retarded recycled cellulose fibre, Eco-Insulation is an established green brand.

ATI – Africa Thermal Insulations at Interbuild Africa 2012

Africa Thermal Insulations (ATI) specialises in thermal insulation products that meet the recently updated building regulations, as required for proof of compliance and occupancy certificates.  In the past, the decision on whether to include roofing insulation or not was most often left to the architect or owner of a building. It was an optional choice and insulation was often excluded, viewed as an unnecessary expense. However, with the recently legislated new building regulations, it is now essential for builders and roofing specialists to highlight to customers the need for effective insulation – not only for the benefit of reduced energy bills but also to meet specific industry standards and obtain the required compliance and occupancy certificates.
