Changing the way we build

The newly legislated SANS 10400-XA: 2011 (November 2011) is set to change the way we build in South Africa.  Hans Schefferlie, executive director of the AAAMSA Group, spoke recently at the South African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry about the rationale behind SANS 10400-XA and its implications for the building industry. Schefferlie was speaking as a prelude to Glasstec 2012, the international trade fair for glass production, processing and products, which will take place 23 to 26 October this year in Düsseldorf, Germany.  Glass, glazing and fenestration are among the key elements of the building envelope that require a re-look in respect of SANS 10400-XA which, as part of the National Building Regulations, governs energy usage in buildings.

Beware the cost of non-compliant windows

It’s been just under three years since the SANS 10400 National Building Regulations, covering energy usage in buildings, were amended in the form of the XA appendices. The aim was to further enforce and regulate energy efficient practices in the built environment, with the long-term benefit of reducing overall energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
