Romatherm®: Used in Subsidised Housing

SANS 10400-XA requires that all new buildings have a legislated amount of insulation. Romatherm Polyester Insulation Blanket is a cost effective insulator that is quick and easy to install. Houses with insulated roofs and ceilings are simply more comfortable and healthier to live in. These thermally improved houses result in substantial energy savings which when multiplied by the number of houses in each community, greatly reduces the power demand on the already “strained” power grid in that area.

The CMA House – building plans available

The Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) is offering architect-designed plans for a 40m² subsidy house, at no charge, to anyone wishing to use them. This initiative is seen by the CMA as one which, if adopted by the construction industry, will improve the quality and building productivity of subsidised housing significantly. Dubbed ‘The CMA House’, the project was officially launched by CMA director, Hamish Laing, at the South African Housing Foundation Conference in September last year.  Laing says the use of modular concrete masonry forms the backbone of The CMA House.

Donated house demonstrates benefits of clay brick

A new home built by Corobrik in Lwandle, Strand, is a “dream come true” for disabled resident Angelina Msizi – and a tangible way for Corobrik to show its support for the rights of women and children. The house is a part of the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements new Siyazama housing project which consists of 82 units.  Speaking at the official handover ceremony in April, which was attended by Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Corobrik director Bertha Zwane said that the house had been built both as a way for the company to give back to those in need and to demonstrate the appropriateness of double skin clay brick construction with a face brick exterior wall as a ‘best solution’ for sustainable housing in terms of economic, social and environmental considerations.

C&CI ‘refresher courses’ for NHBRC quality controllers

The Cement & Concrete Institute (C&CI) is supporting a joint initiative by the National Home Builder Registration Council (NHBRC) and the Department of Human Settlements to improve construction quality standards in government-subsidised housing by providing concrete training to human settlements quality controllers.   Adéle de Lange, C&CI Human Settlements Technical Marketing Consultant, says the short two-hour concrete lectures are provided free of charge by C&CI and form part of a one-day refresher course conducted by the NHBRC on behalf of the Department of Human Settlements nationally in a joint initiative to raise building standards in housing throughout South Africa.

Corobrik views affordable housing market as a key component in 2016

Corobrik believes further developments in South Africa's affordable housing market and investments in social infrastructure are the key to positive prospects for 2016, with the clay brick and paving manufacturer and distributor seeking to add to the value of South Africa’s infrastructure stock and consumer investment at the entry housing level where there is minimal disposable income for maintenance.
