As a result of a Cement & Concrete Institute (C&CI) scholarship, Ntseuoa Motsieloa has made his way from herding his father’s cattle in the hills of Maseru to a UCT Master’s degree in Concrete Materials and Structural Engineering. His degree (received in June this year) followed two-and-a-half years’ research into the resistance of sewer-pipe concrete to acid – and the young man hopes his findings will make a valuable contribution to the development of acid-resistant sewer pipes not only in Southern Africa but universally.

The Southern African Light Steel Frame Building Association (SASFA) is organising two one-day courses which will be presented on consecutive days from end May into early June in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. The first course is on the updated SANS 517: 2011 Light steel frame building standard and has been organised to assist designers, quantity surveyors, developers and other practitioners to understand and quickly implement the standard.
