The best of steel structures 2012

The Steel Awards 2012 judges broke with tradition this year in presenting a combined award for the usually separate ‘Architectural’ and ‘Light Steel Frame Building’ (LSFB) categories. The award went to the new Deloitte Head Office, designed by Boogertman + Partners Architects, at Riverwalk Office Park in Pretoria.  This decision was motivated by the unique qualities of the building which unites excellence in the use of architecturally exposed steel with cutting-edge application of light steel frame building in a commercial building.

Sustainability in steel – Steel Awards 2012

The underlying theme for Steel Awards 2012 is all about sustainability. With the Aveng Group as the main sponsor, the 2012 Steel Awards programme is looking for steel structures that reflect a responsible approach to the environment. “While the judges always consider a range of criteria in judging the submissions, including technical excellence, innovation and aesthetics, this year, ‘green’ issues, in a broad sense, are an important factor,” says Spencer Erling, education director at the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC).

Steel Awards 2012 call for entries

The Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) has issued the call for entries for Steel Awards 2012. The closing date for nominations is 30 April 2012.  Although special attention will be given to sustainable development projects – looking at green building, low environmental impact, community development and other such factors – there are, as usual, no fixed categories in which projects should be entered, with the exception of the Tubular Steel Structures and Light Steel Frame Building categories. The judges decide on categories based on the actual entries received each year. Last year’s categories offer a guideline. They included Mining and Industrial, Architectural, and Bridges, as well as the Tubular Steel and Light Steel Frame Building categories.

Celebrating the best in stainless steel

The Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (Sassda) will stage the Stainless Steel Awards again this year. The awards were last presented in 2008 but, as 2012 marks 100 years of the development of stainless steel, the awards will form part of the industry’s celebrations of ‘a century of innovation’.  Sassda’s new executive director, Bill Scurr, says, “The awards are an industry highlight. They aim to recognise and promote excellence, innovation and entrepreneurial development in the stainless steel industry by profiling innovative thinking and successes in the industry.”
