Designing with light steel frame systems

The Southern African Light Steel Frame Building Association (SASFA) is organising two one-day courses which will be presented on consecutive days from end May into early June in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.  The first course is on the updated SANS 517: 2011 Light steel frame building standard and has been organised to assist designers, quantity surveyors, developers and other practitioners to understand and quickly implement the standard.

At the Southern African Light Steel Frame Building Association’s (SASFA) recent industry feedback meeting, CSIR Principal Researcher, Building Science and Technology Dept., Llewellyn van Wyk, said that, in principle, Innovative Building Technologies (IBT), including Light Steel Frame Building (LSFB), have been accepted by government for use in the construction of government-owned structures.

Growing SA's steel construction industry

Paolo Trinchero, who recently took over from Dr Hennie de Clercq as CEO of the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC), would like to see the southern African steel construction industry grow by at least by 5% per year for the next 10 years. “This will require improving relationships with our African counterparts and being proactive in looking for opportunities in the relevant existing and emerging sectors in South Africa and the sub-Saharan region,” he says.
