Five international architects renowned for their cutting edge thinking, including David Adjaye (UK), Atelier Bow-Wow founders Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kajima (Japan) and Joe Osae-Addo will join a host of innovative South African architects as speakers at the Architecture ZA 2012 Biennial Festival, to be held at Cape Town City Hall, from Thursday, 13 September to Sunday, 16 September. In partnership with the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), Cape Town Institute for Architecture and associate sponsors PPC, the Cement and Concrete Institute, Lafarge and Paragon Architects, the festival is a veritable think-tank of international and local speakers, that also includes debates, master classes, exhibitions, a film festival and city tours.  Architecture ZA 2012 follows on the success of the 2010 Biennial, which took place in Newtown and attracted more than a thousand delegates.

From 3-5 May 2018, #AZA18 will be exploring the journey towards sustainable, adaptive and integrated cities that can respond to growing social, economic and environmental challenges, under the theme ‘WeTheCity: Memory & Resilience’.

The AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture, initiated in 2009, seeks to identify and honour outstanding South African architectural projects that reflect sustainable outcomes. This year, following a vigorous adjudication phase, 12 qualifying entries have been announced for the 2011/12 awards programme.  The entries will be exhibited at the South African Institute of Architects Architecture ZA 2012 Biennale, to be hosted by the Cape Institute for Architecture in September, in the run-up to the announcement of the award-winning projects in October.  Entries for the 2011/12 AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture were submitted under two categories – one for built work that has been beneficially occupied since 15 March 2011 and the other for works of social importance, including research. 

The Architecture for Social Gain Awards 2015, conceptualised by Saint-Gobain in association with the South African Institute of Architects, to recognise and reward talent in the design of spaces that promote learning and development, was launched on the 1st of April this year.
