R5.4 billion in incentives for energy efficiency

The restraint on availability of electrical power supply is one of the factors that is obstructing the rollout of building projects. Speaking at the recent Building Industry Crisis Summit, which was hosted by Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) in Johannesburg in February, Andrew Etzinger, general manager for resources and strategy at Eskom, offered delegates a clear picture of the current status on electricity supply versus demand. He also outlined Eskom’s plans to increase its power generation capacity as well as the incentives it already has in place to encourage all users of electricity to reduce their current levels of consumption. Etzinger appealed to building professionals and contractors to influence their clients to make energy-efficient choices upfront – in the design of buildings and specification of materials, as well as in specifying the right equipment in lighting, office equipment, heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) systems, including pumps and fans, and in installing power management and control systems.

SANRAL leads the way for green government buildings

The new corporate headquarters for the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) in Pretoria has been awarded a 4-star Green Star SA - Office Design v1 rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), the country’s green building authority.  As the first parastatal in South Africa to achieve a Green Star SA rating for one of its buildings, SANRAL, an agency of the Department of Transport, is leading the way for government and state-owned enterprises to move towards green building standards.  Worldwide, buildings are reportedly responsible for a third of all carbon emissions. Given that SA has boldly committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 and 42% by 2025, the reduction of carbon emissions via buildings and the built environment presents one of the most efficient ways of achieving these commitments.

Saving electricity with CFLs

South Africans have saved 1 800MW worth of electricity by switching to energy-efficient lighting. The power parastatal, Eskom, recently reported that between 2004 and 2010, 43.5 million compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were rolled out across the country as part of its National Efficient Lighting Programme. This is the highest number of CFLs in the world to be rolled out in one country through a single campaign. Through this, South Africans have helped save enough electricity to power a city the size of Durban.
