Interim services for informal settlements

Earlier this year the eThekwini Municipality took the ground-breaking step to extend interim services to selected informal settlements. The project is being piloted in two settlements, Redcliffe and Kenville – home to an estimated 2 800 families, where roads, pathways, electrical services and storm-water drainage are being rolled out.

Hope for South Africa’s housing hold-up

In his recent SONA, President Jacob Zuma said that about 3 million housing units had been delivered since 1994 and that nearly 500 informal settlements had been replaced with quality housing over the past five years. However there are still 1.6m households living in informal settlements and a backlog of more than 2.3m housing units, according to the country’s last census.

Fighting fires in informal settlements

Leading fire equipment supplier and subsidiary of the Rovic group of companies, SafeQuip, is spearheading an initiative to try and prevent the disastrous consequences of veld fires when they occur next to townships. SafeQuip has donated 20 fire extinguishers to volunteer fire-fighting groups in Masiphumelele and Khayelitsha in Cape Town so that the teams can fight fires as they start. If the programme is successful in reducing township fires, the plan is to roll out the solution across the country.
