The new waterproofing product, duraproof dekflex, from a.b.e Construction Chemicals has been used successfully to waterproof two balconies at the Just Letting building in Gordon’s Bay. Lloyd O’Ryan, a.b.e. technical sales consultant in the Western Cape, says the two balconies – with a total floor area of 40m² – had previously been waterproofed with a self-adhesive membrane and, before that, with copper flashings. “However, the falls on the screeds were inadequate, so rainwater tended to collect on the balconies. Furthermore, as a result of extensive renovations on the building, the balconies were badly scuffed, cracked and generally in a poor state,” O’Ryan recalls.
