PVC minimisation clause out of Green Star ratings

The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) has announced that the use of PVC products in buildings seeking Green Star SA ratings will no longer be penalised. This means that environmentally conscious building contractors in South Africa can now make use of the full benefits of PVC piping products.  The GBCSA developed its Green Star SA rating system to provide the local property industry with an objective measurement for green buildings, and to recognise and reward environmental leadership in the industry. The council initially introduced the clause to minimise the use of PVC products in buildings due to environmental concerns regarding their formulation, manufacturing and end-of-life disposal.

SANRAL leads the way for green government buildings

The new corporate headquarters for the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) in Pretoria has been awarded a 4-star Green Star SA - Office Design v1 rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), the country’s green building authority.  As the first parastatal in South Africa to achieve a Green Star SA rating for one of its buildings, SANRAL, an agency of the Department of Transport, is leading the way for government and state-owned enterprises to move towards green building standards.  Worldwide, buildings are reportedly responsible for a third of all carbon emissions. Given that SA has boldly committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 and 42% by 2025, the reduction of carbon emissions via buildings and the built environment presents one of the most efficient ways of achieving these commitments.

Learn more about green buildings

The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) offers a number of different training courses, seminars and workshops which are scheduled throughout the year. These give building industry professionals and other practitioners the opportunity to learn more about the Green Star SA certification process, the use of computer simulations in achieving Green Star SA certification, or the basics about green buildings and the Green Star SA tools currently available, among other related topics.  All courses are validated for CPD (continuing professional development) points for architects and engineers.  Towards the end of March the GBCSA is running a Green Star SA - Simulations and Submissions Seminar, a Green Star SA Project Certification Workshop and a Greening Commercial Interiors Workshop, in Johannesburg.  The Green Star SA Accredited Professional Course will be run in April and May in four main centres: in Cape Town, 17 April; Johannesburg, 18 April; Bloemfontein, 19 April; and Port Elizabeth, 24 May.

Construction practice contributes to green star rating

The construction of South Africa’s first 5-star rated green building was a challenge taken on by Murray & Roberts Western Cape as a project that would showcase its ability to meet the exacting demands of the Green Building Council of South Africa’s (GBCSA) Green Star SA ratings.  Chris Prodehl, senior contracts manager at Murray & Roberts Western Cape, says, “Bidding for the appointment as the main contractor on Aurecon’s new office building in Century City required careful scrutiny of the contractual requirements. Prior to this contract we’d had limited exposure to handling projects with high-end green star accreditation as a priority objective.
