Treated timber for new KZN game lodge

Bivane Game Lodge in northern KwaZulu-Natal presents a prime example of the use of treated timber in construction in the natural environment.  The lodge was acquired in 1999 by entrepreneur Des Robins and, with the changes and upgrading he has implemented, it has carved itself a special niche among visitors from local and international markets.  The lodge comprises two family units – thatched chalets that sleep four each, plus three chalets that sleep two each and a split-level chalet that offers extra luxury. There is also a full restaurant that caters for functions and meals, and a bar.

Drakensberg resort moves to energy efficiency

KwaZulu-Natal’s Champagne Sports Resort in the Drakensberg has invested in energy-efficient electrical and plumbing fittings which are reducing the resort’s electricity consumption significantly.  Magnet, which specialises in the design and installation of the latest energy efficiency systems, has recently installed heat pumps and low-flow shower heads in the hotel block and timeshare chalets as part of the resort’s energy-saving programme.

Timber construction on remote Mozambique island

Cova de Tubarao, a lodge on Macaneta Island off the Mozambique coast, demonstrates the attributes of treated timber in construction. The island is just 15km wide and 70 km long and the environment is characterised by wetlands and dunes. Care has been taken in the construction of the lodge – and in further development currently under way – to protect the fragile ecology of the island.
