Electronic fire detection and protection systems

Centa Group automatic fire extinguishing systemThe Centa Group supplies a comprehensive range of internationally approved electronic fire protection equipment which is used in all sectors of commerce and industry.

The range incorporates fire detection devices, including smoke, heat and flame detectors, as well as other detection systems.

Duncan Boyes, chairman of The Centa Group, says, “Insurance companies are increasingly demanding the installation of fire detection equipment in almost every environment. For optimum safety and protection, it is critical that the correct type of fire detection equipment is selected and that the equipment is professionally installed and maintained.

“To ensure installations are correctly carried out, the fire detection industry has formed the FDIA (Fire Detection Installers Association). This association aims to train and register installation technicians, to guarantee high standards.

“Companies can also make use of the FDIB (Fire Detection Inspection Bureau) which provides an audit and certification service – to check that installations have been carried out correctly, in line with SABS requirements, and certify them accordingly.”

The Centa Group has appointed a network of specialist installers throughout South Africa who can undertake electronic installations for fire detection and protection systems including conventional and analogue addressable fire control systems, aspirating systems, access control and CCTV systems, communicating fire signals and automatic fire extinguishing systems.

Automatic fire extinguishing systems, which include CO2, inert and molecular systems, form a large part of The Centa Group’s systems portfolio. When a fire is detected, the system automatically releases a gas into the affected area to suppress and extinguish the fire.

Automatic fire extinguishing systems are usually installed in critical areas where a fire could destroy valuable or irreplaceable equipment or information – in archive storage areas and computer server rooms, for example.

The Centa Group, with a team of specialist electronic technicians, offers a technical advisory, installation and maintenance service for complete fire protection. The group operates throughout Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean islands. Centa Holdings, part of The Centa Group, is the only ISO 9001-2000 listed manufacturer of fire equipment in sub-Saharan Africa.

An independent survey conducted in Gauteng on behalf of the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) last year shows that concrete block paving (CBP) is, in most instances, a more cost-effective surfacing option for driveways, car parks, residential streets and township roads than premix asphalt paving (PAP). The survey also found CBP to be more cost-effective for light and heavy duty industrial yards, bus terminals and through-roads in urban areas. The results of the survey have been published by the CMA in an updated leaflet, previously published in 2007.
