Echo Floors - hollow-core floor slab pioneer

Echo Floors, a member of the Echo Group, has been manufacturing reinforced hollow-core concrete floor slabs for almost 30 years. With that pioneering background, it brings to the South African building and construction industry an unmatched wealth of experience, knowledge and engineering excellence.

Since 1982, Echo Floors has chiefly served the residential market – typically individual houses, townhouse and cluster developments, and more recently affordable housing. In some of the most impressive developments in this key sector in recent years, the Echo flooring system has consistently shown how it can speed the completion of high-density housing developments in the most economical way, by-passing the time-consuming processes of in-situ concrete flooring. Typical landmark examples are the high density housing projects in; Newtown, Cosmo City, Roodepoort Inner City, Protea Glen, Mogale City, Mamelodi and Lephalale, to mention just some of the many projects.

Home alterations and additions is another specialised market where the Echo Floors system works particularly well, and the company has a dedicated customer liaison officer to smooth the building process for the layman extending an existing home or building a new one.

In the commercial and industrial market, too, its short-span slabs serve a defined architectural purpose.

A floor constructed with Echo Floors hollow-core slabs is 30% lighter than a conventional solid in-situ concrete slab. Slabs are manufactured to a standard width of 900mm, can be custom-cut to non-standard widths, and are produced in 100mm increments up to 8,2m long. These can be cut to the precise size and angles required by the contractor, and are checked on site. This – and the fact that Echo Floors has an “off-the-shelf” stock of between 30 000m² and 40 000m² of slabs – means short lead-times.  Echo Floors service extends to a full installation and grouting service.

An Echo reinforced precast hollow-core slab with a structural (concrete) topping is referred to as a composite slab and contributes to the structural stability of the building as well as enhancing the load bearing capacity of the slab.

The engineering quality of Echo Floors slabs is underwritten by ISO 9001 accreditation, and the company is expected to carry the SABS mark on its products in the near future.  Another stamp of approval comes from its membership of the Concrete Manufacturers Association.
