Retaining walls set the site

Under construction, the retaining wall at Mall of the North in Polokwane – almost 5 000m² in extent – is built with Technicrete’s Enviro-Wall concrete retaining blocks. At the new Mall of the North in Polokwane, Limpopo, there is one of the biggest retaining walls built in South Africa with Technicrete’s Enviro-Wall concrete retaining blocks.

The sloping site and the extent of walling required presented the engineers on this project with two challenges: while the wall needed to be of the most secure construction possible, it also needed to be pleasing to the eye for visitors to the mall.

They decided on Technicrete’s Enviro-Wall for the project. This is a versatile, reversible concrete block. Enviro-Wall can be built up as a solid engineering structure, or, when reversed, it exposes gaps – designed for planting.

A total of 4 600m² of the blocks were used in the construction of the retaining wall at the Mall of the North. Once it has been planted with flowers and shrubs, the wall will be softened by greenery.

Enviro-Wall is widely used in commercial, industrial and domestic applications as well as for river-bank protection. It is suitable for high or low walling, constructed either vertically or at an angle.
