The Gypsum Story by Gyproc, a division of Saint-Gobain, traces its roots back nearly a century when British Plaster Board (BPB) Limited established the first plasterboard plant in the United Kingdom. Fueled by the demand for rapid construction methods during World War II and bolstered by the acquisition of Gyproc Products Limited, BPB rapidly expanded both domestically and internationally.
Venturing into South Africa initially, BPB then expanded across Europe, acquiring Placoplatre, a leading name in French plasterboard production since 1947. Further growth saw acquisitions in North America and the Nordic countries, including CertainTeed in North America and Rigips in Austria, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. This expansion continued into Scandinavia and Belgium until Saint-Gobain acquired BPB in 2005.
Since then, Saint-Gobain has maintained a trajectory of global expansion, evolving into the successful multinational corporation it is today.
Operating under five regional brands (Gyproc, Placo®, Rigips, British Gypsum, and CertainTeed), Saint-Gobain caters to local needs, with Gyproc serving as the primary brand across many countries and new markets. It is synonymous with Saint-Gobain’s gypsum and ceilings activity.
Gyproc has been a part of South Africa since its introduction in 1929.
