The Powerturn swing door drive received the “Environmental Product Declaration” (EPD), a globally recognised eco-label, at the BAU trade fair in Munich. EPD of the new drive, introduced for the first time at BAU, was created on the basis of the demanding regulations of the European Standard for sustainable building.
Module for sustainability analysis of a building
As an information system for the environmental performance of building products and construction components, EPD is the prerequisite for assessing the sustainability of a building. The core of the EPD is an eco-balance, which discloses the environmental impact of a building product throughout its life cycle. Hence, the EPD of Powerturn is a module which contributes towards the total evaluation of the environmental performance of a building. The ever-increasing importance of EPDs appears in the growing circulation of building certifications. EPDs can contribute to the certification of the sustainability of buildings, for example, using the international rating systems BREEAM and LEED, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) or the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB). EPDs are increasingly being demanded in invitations to tenders from architects and constructors.
Powerturn – sustainability with various functions and designs
“The use of the GEZE Powerturn swing door drive helps in improving the energy balance of buildings by reliably closing doors. Thanks to the intelligent drive concept with Smart swing function, the energy consumption can be reduced during operation. As a product with real “Made in Germany” quality, attention is paid to resource conservation, starting with the manufacturing process. Powerturn is designed for durability and ease of maintenance and significantly contributes to a sustainable building concept even after its period of use due to its almost complete recycling ability”, says Florian Birkenmayer, Managing Director Development & Product Management at GEZE.
For doors with frequent use in prestigious entrance areas or multi-functional doors, e.g. in escape and rescue routes, Powerturn is the solution for all installation situations and whatever the mode of operation and is a perfect example of the freedom of design and universal design. With the Smart swing function, even manual door opening is child’s play. At the same time, it is a future-proof system component in door systems with complex functionality. Whether in combination with door control units such as the TZ 320, which controls and monitors the opening and closing processes for escape and rescue route doors, or as a fresh air opening in smoke and heat extraction systems or as part of a security interlocking door system.
Scientifically sound and transparent
EPD of Powerturn is based on a scientifically sound sustainability assessment and includes all the relevant information about eco-balance of the swing door drive. It was created in accordance with the IBU Product Category Rules (PCR) “Drive systems for automatic doors and gates”. The transparent, neutral and verifiable publication of all the information in the EPD including the eco-balance data is done in accordance with the internationally agreed standards EN 15804 and ISO 14025.
“EPD of Powerturn is not only an evidence of environmental responsibility. The results of the eco-balance also give us concrete reasons for continuously optimising our products, production processes and installations in terms of environmental safety. From product development and production to sales and after-sales service maintenance, GEZE operates according to the latest environmental standards. The GEZE environmental management system was certified according to the international standard DIN EN ISO 14001”, continues Florian Birkenmayer.
