The newest addition to Sol Kerzner’s One & Only Resorts stable was opened last year at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. In this project, Corobrik clay pavers were used over an area of about 5 000m²: at the main entrance of the hotel and continuing down the stairways, around the Marina Basin and to the spa and Villa Islands in the landscaped grounds.
Darryl Pryce-Lewis of Waterfront Landscape Architects says the paving colours and designs were selected by Bensley Design Studios, an architectural design company based in Thailand. Pryce-Lewis supervised the implementation locally.
He adds that the paving designs created for the project are exclusive to the resort. “Each villa has a unique paved entrance, designed specifically for its surrounds. No other villa in the world will share this pattern.
“Although the design of the paving was unique, the look and feel had to be sympathetic with the hard landscaping finishes used in the Waterfront precinct and the De Hoop Red pavers’ rich red colour and texture provided the link.”
Four different types of Corobrik pavers were selected: 50mm Wheatstone pavers with gravel hues typical of the wineland soils; 73mm De Hoop Red pavers with deep red, near burgundy tones; 73mm Autumn pavers in rich golden hues with ironspot flecks; and 73mm Rustic Blend rich red-brown pavers with flashes of blue.
The contractor, Andre Hauptfleifch of Pro Asphalting, says this was a challenging project to execute. “Although it was medium-sized, it was complex and the highest quality finish was non-negotiable. There were several factors to take into consideration and we worked closely with the architect to ensure that the design of the paving met the overall requirements,” he says.
In addition to their aesthetic value, the excellent flexural strength and enduring quality of the clay brick pavers will ensure their long-term performance
