Cobra supplies one of the most comprehensive ranges of plumbing fittings in the world and it includes Cobra’s Safe Single Layer Pipe (SLP) and Multi-Layer Pipe (MLP) systems which offer cost-effective alternatives to traditional pipe installations and joining methods.
The two systems comprise 15mm, 22mm and 28mm single layer and multi-layer pipes, Cobra Safe Inserts, and a specially designed pipe cutting tool. The MLP system also includes a pipe preparation tool which ensures that the inserts fit the pipe correctly.
The systems are designed to be used with standard Cobra compression fittings and Cobra inserts. The unique O-ring seal ensures that the inner layer of aluminium in the MLP is protected from corrosion.
The pipes are manufactured from high grade polyethylene and peroxide: the MLP from PE-Xb using the silane method and the SLP from PE-Xa using a patented cross-linking peroxide method. This ensures that the long grained molecules are totally cross-linked within a few minutes of the extrusion process, creating a perfect link.
As a result of this manufacturing process, the SLP and MLP pipes have the strength of copper with the corrosion-resistance of plastic. They are chlorine- and scale-resistant and their inherent insulation properties reduce heat loss within the system significantly. The aluminium layer in the MLP also retains rigidity at high temperatures, ensuring that the integrity of the system is maintained.
Both pipe systems deliver a number of installation benefits to plumbers. They are flexible and lightweight and no special crimping is required. The pipes are available in 50m and 100m lengths (28mm only in 50m lengths) and all the required Cobra Safe Inserts, compression fittings, prep’ tools and specially developed cutters are readily available.
Both systems are designed for residential applications only and can be used for hot and cold water installations inside buildings. They are manufactured to meet the respective SANS standards for MLP and SLP systems.
