1.618 Student Design Competition winners

PG_Bison_all_the_finalists_1.618_Design_CompetitionPG Bison recently announced the winners in its 1.618 Student Design Competition. Due to the high number of excellent submissions received for the 2011 competition and the difficulty in singling out just one submission to receive the first prize, the judging panel decided this year to award joint 2nd and joint 3rd place prizes to four students and their lecturers. They each have won an all-expenses-paid trip to Cape Town to attend the 2012 Design Indaba Conference. In addition the winners received thousands of rands’ worth of vouchers from The Foschini Group.

The brief for this year’s 1.618 Design Competition, conceived by Callie van der Merwe of The Design Partnership in collaboration with Nkhensani Nkosi of Stoned Cherrie, called on students to design a fashion studio and workshop as well as display and retail space in a given building that Foschini had purchased in Woodstock, Cape Town. This would be the workspace for Nkosi to develop her Love Movement fashion range which is carried in 50 Foschini stores nationwide.

The award winners were announced at a function held at the Alex Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, in October.

Violet Chengeta of the Tshwane University of Technology’s Department of Architecture, and Tarquin van der Westhuizen of the BHC School of Design, were selected as joint second place winners.

Peter Lekganyane, also of the Tshwane University of Technology, Department of Interior Design, and Lorika Martins of the Potchefstroom Academy http://www.tinascholtz.co.za/interior shared third place.

Jason Wells, brand manager at PG Bison, said, “It’s always invigorating to see what each new crop of interior design and architecture students have to offer. And this year was particularly interesting, with the challenge the judges faced in trying to choose one outright winner from among the 10 finalists which were all of such a high standard.”

The judging panel included: Callie van der Merwe, founder partner of The Design Partnership (and winner of the inaugural PG Bison competition); Phill Mashabane, President of the South African Council of Professional Architects (SACAP) and principal partner at Mashabane Rose & Associates; Andrea Kleinloog, owner of Anatomy Design; Nthabi Taukobong, founder of Ditau Interiors; Annemarie Meintjes, deputy editor and chief creative for VISI; Kim Fairbairn, founder Continuum Architects and Fairbairn Architecture; Pat Henry, partner at MDS Architecture; Sarah Calburn, architect and programme director of Architecture ZA 2010; Roy Naeser, head creative for in-store development, Foschini ; and Adrian Whines, founder Brand DNA.

At the awards function PG Bison also introduced an award for Outstanding Contribution to Design and this inaugural award was presented to Brian Steinhobel. Steinhobel is well-known in the design industry and his relationship with PG Bison began over 20 years ago when he was involved with the company in conceptualising this student design competition.
