In the Hluhluwe Project in KwaZulu-Natal, a range of U-PVC pipes manufactured by DPI Plastics is being used in the construction of the water supply line to reach close to 13 000 rural residents over an area spanning 146 km2.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Water Affairs is responsible for the development which is a multiphase project that includes the construction of water treatment works at Hluhluwe dam, a five mega-litre reservoir and a bulk supply and reticulation network extending over 400km.
DPI Plastics product manager for pressure pipe systems, Renier Snyman says that the company has delivered more than R12 million worth of piping to the project since 2009. “The project is currently in Phase V which is due for completion this month and will see the overall project 67 per cent complete. To date DPI Plastics has delivered more than 4 000 six-metre lengths of pipes to the site,” he says.
Snyman says that the products supplied to the project are unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (U-PVC) pipes, with diameters ranging between 160mm and 400mm. “The DPI Plastics U-PVC range of pipes was selected for this project for their high quality and the fact that they are manufactured under controlled conditions,” he says.
He adds that the logistical aspects of the contract have proven to be the biggest challenge for DPI Plastics over the duration of the project thus far. “Safely transporting pipes of up to 400mm in diameter to Hluhluwe from Johannesburg and ensuring that the right sized pipes are loaded in time to meet delivery deadlines has been a logistical challenge,” he says.
Snyman emphasises that DPI Plastics, as a founding member of the Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers Association (SAPPMA), remains committed to delivering high quality products to its clients. “The company also offers value-added services, providing training to contractors, free of charge, across its entire range of products. This service is offered as part of the all-in-one solutions package aimed at ensuring that, with comprehensive training in pre- and post-installation applications, contractors use our products to their full potential,” he concludes.
