Factory washroom repairs from floor to ceiling

When the Cadbury’s factory in Sydenham, Port Elizabeth, needed renovations, a fast turnaround time was critical as the internal repairs would affect production. With this challenge in mind the contractor specified selected Sika products to ensure that the work could be completed quickly and efficiently.

The requirement was to renovate and upgrade the washroom areas and repair the soffit and walls which had been damaged due to water ingress. The client requested a completely seamless system with no weak points. William Scott Contractors recognised that the ceiling, walls and floors would need to be coated to provide a contained, seamless area that would be easy to keep clean. The task called for high quality, reliable products and the contractors selected Sikagard-720 EpoCem ZA, Sikafloor-31N PurCem and Sikafloor-21N PurCem.

Sikagard-720 Epo-Cem was chosen to skim the ceiling and walls as this superfine epoxy-cement sealing mortar enables a faster application time for Sikafloor-31N and can be applied to damp substrates. It is itself easy and quick to apply and has good chemical and mechanical resistance. It is used as a thin-film sealer or blowhole filler on vertical and horizontal surfaces prior to the application of other Sika epoxy products. In the washroom renovation at the Cadbury’s factory, all existing plaster and coatings on the soffit and walls were removed before the Sikagard-720 Epo-Cem was applied, followed by Sikafloor-31N PurCem, which is a three-part, solvent-free, high build, coloured, polyurethane modified, cement and aggregate coating.

For the floors, once the existing PU floor coatings had been diamond ground to establish a clean floor surface, Sikafloor-21N PurCem was applied. This is a self-smoothing polyurethane screed that is used in areas subject to medium to heavy loading, abrasion and high chemical exposure. It provides a smooth, flat and decorative wearing surface.

Both products have high chemical, mechanical and abrasion resistance, are odourless and VOC-free.

Sikagard PurCem conforms to the many requirements of the food and beverage industry and offers manufacturers in this sector a fast-track long-lasting finishing product.

In the renovations at the Cadbury’s factory Sika offered a comprehensive specification together with data on all products, providing a professional service. The project was completed quickly and the factory lost only three days of production.

Sika products were selected to enable a fast turnaround on repairs and renovations to the washroom area at the Cadbury’s factory in Port Elizabeth.
