In October world-renowned expert on precast concrete, Dr Kim S Elliott, will be presenting three full-day seminars on precast hollow-core flooring and load-bearing concrete structures. He will be joined by Simon Knutton, local expert on gravity walls and precast concrete.
The seminars are aimed at professional design engineers, architects and graduate students in civil engineering, building technology and architecture. Practising professionals attending the seminars will earn one CPD point.
Hosted and organised by the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) in collaboration with the Concrete Society of Southern Africa, the seminars will take place on 17 October in Johannesburg, 19 October in Port Elizabeth, and 21 October in Cape Town.
CMA director, Hamish Laing, says the use of precast concrete framed multi-storey buildings is taking hold in South Africa. “It is widely regarded as an economical, structurally sound and architecturally versatile form of construction for buildings up to 40 storeys, although the maximum height reached in South Africa to date is five storeys.”
Dr Elliott says that prestressed hollow-core concrete slabs combine the benefits of very fast construction and high quality materials with the advantages of production line economies and quality assurance, particularly when used as floor slabs.
Dr Elliott is currently a consultant to the precast industry in the UK and Malaysia. He was previously a senior lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at Nottingham University in the UK and has also worked for Trent Concrete Structures, one of the UK’s leading precast concrete manufacturers. Since 1987 Dr Elliott has been researching the behaviour of precast concrete structures and has published and lectured widely on the subject.
Simon Knutton is a professional engineer and a consultant with more than 25 years of experience in the industry. As well as being involved in a wide range of projects in South Africa, Knutton consults internationally – on projects in Dubai, for example, and other states in the Middle East.
