abeproof thermo-shield, a new heat-shielding and waterproofing product from a.b.e. Construction Chemicals, was used recently to waterproof a large roof area of the Sunbel building in Voortrekker Road, Bellville, Cape Town.
abeproof thermo-shield is a water-based waterproofing membrane which incorporates advanced insulation technology. It contains fine spherical particles that minimise the surface temperature on roofs and walls by re-emitting most of the radiant heat energy away from the building before it can reach the interior. As a result, internal temperatures are kept low and the energy costs required to cool the building are reduced.
The maintenance department of FC Marais, owner of the Sunbel office building, approached a.b.e-approved applicator, Hydro-Cape Waterproofing, to waterproof about 3 000m² of the roof over the ground floor retail area occupied by Pick n Pay.
a.b.e. technical sales consultant, Brett Papayanni, says Hydro-Cape owner, Glenn Allin, and senior sales executive, Darrell Lewis, recognised the opportunity to use the recently launched abeproof thermo-shield. “I was invited to inspect the area to be waterproofed and we all agreed that abeproof thermo-shield would be the most appropriate product to meet the client’s needs.
“The roof had previously been coated with red oxide so it needed to be high-pressure cleaned and primed with a water-based, metallic etch-primer. Two coats of abeproof thermo-shield were then applied, with the roof sheet overlaps reinforced with polypropylene membrane before the final thermo-shield spray application.
“abeproof can be applied to substrates such as concrete, aluminium, steel, fibre-cement sheets, masonry, brick and wood. The product also has anti-mould and anti-fungal properties,” Papayanni adds.
Hydro-Cape Waterproofing has been operating since 1992. The company specialises in traditional bitumen-based, heat-fused and self-adhesive waterproofing products as well as polymer-modified cementitious systems, but for the Sunbel contract Hydro-Cape selected abeproof thermo-shield.
This product is one of seven new, environmentally friendly waterproofing products launched by a.b.e. last year. The other products are abeproof acrylic primer, abeproof anti-root, abeproof PU ECO, abeproof acrylic, Matryx K11, and duraproof dekflex.
This range of low VOC waterproofing products now manufactured locally by a.b.e. is based on technology with proven global applications sourced from within the Materis Group. a.b.e. is part of the Chryso SA Group which, in turn, is part of the Materis Group that is headquartered in France.
