Contrary to the general slowdown in the construction sector, BSi Steel has experienced substantial growth over the past financial year and has come to be recognised as an industry-leading distributor of steel products.
Started in 1986 as a backyard business in Pietermaritzburg, BSi Steel is today a JSE AltX-listed company and employs more than 600 staff in its operations across sub-Saharan Africa.
Having drawn together a collection of small companies offering different products, BSi Steel as a group now offers a diverse product range. This includes roofing, flat products, long products, tubing and cold formed sections.
Chairman William Battershill says, “As part of the company’s overall growth plan, which it embarked on two years ago, BSi Steel has invested in a 30 000m2 central steel processing and distribution centre at Klipriver, in Midvaal. In addition, the company plans to establish retail outlets across Southern Africa to extend its geographical footprint.”
BSi Steel currently has four branches in South Africa, eight branches in Southern Africa and a newly-established branch in Accra, Ghana. The company’s extensive range of products are all compliant with ISO 9001:2000 quality management standards.
Battershill adds that BSi Steel has three distribution divisions. “The bulk sales division offers clients an alternative to buying from the mill, with improved turnaround times and competitive prices. The division focuses on large volume businesses in the construction, mining and manufacturing industries.
“The maxi merchant division, which is represented in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, supplies medium to large orders where customers require reliability of supply, quick turnaround times and a degree of flexibility.
“The express division is geared to service customers in its immediate geographical area and offers a wide product range with a high degree of service and flexibility to meet the requirements of customers.”
