Adding to its already extensive range of construction chemicals for diverse applications in the building industry, Mapei South Africa has introduced Mapeflex Firestop 1200°C, a refractory grout that is highly resistant to flames, high temperatures and fumes.
This one-component, asbestos- and solvent-free rigid grout is made from sodium silicate and special mineral fillers. It bonds to all porous, absorbent substrates, is odourless and quick-setting, and is ideal for rigid grouting of joints in chimneys, ovens, radiators, barbeques, flues and rigid fire-break joints. The soft, grey paste can withstand temperatures of up to 1 200°C and temporary peak temperatures of up to 1 600°C.
Paul Nieuwoudt, product manager for Building Systems at Mapei South Africa, says, “The product can also be used for pointing or for installation layers on refractory bricks when building or carrying out maintenance work on elements that are in continuous, permanent contact with flames or heat.”
For best results, Mapei recommends that the surfaces which Mapeflex Firestop 1200°C is used to bond or seal should be dry or slightly damp, solid and free of dust, loose parts, oil, grease, wax, old paintwork and rust on metal surfaces. “The product should not be applied to surfaces that are frequently exposed to rainwater, high levels of humidity or stagnant water, or that are subject to capillary rising damp. It is also not suitable for joints that are subject to cyclical movements,” says Nieuwoudt.
Mapei South Africa is part of the Italian-based multinational Mapei Group, a leading manufacturer of chemical products and adhesives for the construction industry.
