Controlling access with prestige revolving doors

Turnstar has launched a new range of high-end prestige revolving doors to complement its existing range of physical access control products. The move represents a massive shake-up in an industry mainly controlled by overseas European imports.

The main purpose of a revolving door is to provide unhindered easy access into a building without allowing air to escape or enter the building, resulting in lower air conditioning and heating costs. The new revolving door range is available in both manual and automatic configurations and each door is fully customisable based on the customer’s aesthetic preferences and functional requirements. The revolving doors are available in diameters of 1.6m up to 5m and can be manufactured in either 2, 3 or 4-wing configurations.

The frame of the revolving door is manufactured from either powder coated mild steel, 304 or 316 grade brushed stainless steel. The brushed stainless steel provides a more visually appealing and lasting finish.

The glass used generally is a 6.38mm PVB laminate or an 8 mm toughened glass. Greater aesthetics can be provided through the use of thicker multi layered and coloured laminates. For high security applications, thicknesses as high as 70 mm can be used both in flat and curved glass depending on the desired ballistic performance.

In order to seal the edges of the revolving door, high strength brushes are fitted to the glass wings. The revolving door can also be manufactured for night-locking by means of a mortice lock configuration or an electromechanical break configuration connected to the motor in the head assembly.

The launch of the automatic revolving door provides a cost effective and high speed entry point to the building without inconveniencing the pedestrian. Rotation speed is adjustable, with a standard setting of 6 – 8 rotations per minute and rotation is initiated by a sensor which automatically detects the approach of a pedestrian from approximately 3m before the revolving door. The motor allows for ultra quiet operation and when a power failure occurs, the automatic door allows for manual operation with minimal force exerted by the pedestrian.

Safety is, of course, a major concern for automatic revolving doors and because of this Turnstar automatic revolving doors are fitted with a ‘no-crush’ ultra sensitive safety edge system which instantly stops the door if the door encounters an obstacle. This prevents extremities such as fingers and hands from getting caught by the door. Another built-in safety feature is the use of a very low backlash motor gearbox which enables the door to stop instantaneously with negligible play when the ‘no-crush’ or emergency stop systems are activated. This is a feature can save lives as revolving doors have a tremendous amount of inertia with the potential to cause a great deal of damage.
