Colt Solar Shading Louvred Screens were recently used on the Bateman Head Office in Greenstone Hill. RVI-Architectural Solutions found it an interesting and, due to the location, a prominent project
As always, time was of the essence. Added to this was awkward site access and RVI knew from the onset that installing the Solar Shading Screens, complete with the tubular steel support structures on time, would require concentrated effort.
RVI Contracts Manager: Pierre van der Merwe instigated and charged the steel support design work to Keith Trowbridge, of Trowbridge Higson-Smith & Associates. Pierre anticipated this as a critical element and gave it top priority. If the installation of the steelwork became problematic, then the louvre blade installation would suffer, leading to a roll on of problems in delivery.
The support steelwork alone, made up from 200mm square & 200 x 100mm rectangular mild steel rectangular sections, constituted some 18 Tonnes. Splicing of the support frames took place on site, and once the support brackets had been installed, anchored and aligned, and the steel support frames installed; the COLT CEL 250/40 CHL extruded profile louvre blade installation followed fairly quickly and smoothly.
Project Architect, Mr. Claudio de Jesus of Empowered Spaces Architects was very particular and specific as to the louvre blade selection, the fixing angle of the blades and the finishing (powder coated) colours. From the photographs included in this article, it is plain to see that the eventual effect of the solar shading screens, is not only stunning and aesthetically pleasing, but an essential element in the overall façade engineering.

One of the main reasons for automating windows is that of convenience. Not all windows are located at reachable height and these may need a pole to operate them whilst, in some larger rooms and corridors, the sheer number of windows that need to be opened and closed make an automated solution preferable. ...
If the developer and the architect provide a building that has taken into account all the modern “green” technological advancements, products, finishes and elements available to them to accommodate their client’s wants and needs, then to leave the plant and machinery exposed – to both the elements and visibility – is like leaving the icing off a freshly baked cake. Nice to look at, but not necessarily edible?...
