Never one to back down from a challenge, Cobra Watertech employed some serious out the box thinking in its latest KwaZulu-Natal project, which involved conceptualising a holistic solution for the public showers along Durban’s beachfront that are constantly falling prey to vandalism.
Tandi-Lee Salvado from Cobra says the eThekwini Municipality was looking for locally made products that were readily accessible off the shelf and that proactively worked to reduce water wastage. Above all that, they also needed to be as vandal-resistant as possible to deal with this ongoing problem.
“Our products met all three of the municipality’s basic criteria, so Cobra was the natural choice for the beachfront showers. But the real challenge was determining which products to use to tackle the problem of vandalism. So we designed a special electronic touch sensor specifically for this application that operates both the shower and the drinking fountain. We are now piloting the units at the showers at two Durban beaches, namely Dairy Beach and Addington Beach,” Tandi-Lee Salvado explains.
Cobra’s electronic taps and mixers deliver water only when activated; and because water flow rates can be set, the units offer optimum performance while being both water and energy efficient.
To date the sensors have held up well, but Cobra is inviting users at the two beaches to provide them with feedback of their experience of the new showers, either through email or the Cobra’s Facebook page. Based on this feedback, the new shower design could be rolled out to all public showers along Durban’s Golden Mile.
This project highlighted Cobra’s solutions-driven approach as well as its excellent work ethic and ability to collaborate with other partners, as the project also required the ongoing input of BKS Engineers and the local municipality.
